HPC System Software Architect (M/F)


Who we are:

LuxProvide is the national supercomputer HPC organization in charge of the planning, installation and long term operation of the same. For our recently set up organization and HPC infrastructure, we are seeking for a Network Engineer to join the core team in charge of the design, implementation and operation of the same. You will be come part of a high performance team of experts with the unique opportunity to contribute to the initial planning and installation of the whole HPC infrastructure.


The tasks:

  • Deploy and maintain a complete software environment for the users on top of the base operating system running on HPC and Cloud platforms
  • Install, configure, integrate, test, and maintain multiple software stacks, from base compilers, to support libraries, middleware, and high-level applications, both general-purpose and domain specific
  • Ensure that user software environments adhere to FAIR principles and are generated with a high emphasis on reproducibility and portability and that user software environments integrate well with vendor-provided hardware/software components and take full advantage of the underlying platform
  • Make software components available to and selectable by the users, allowing for environments and software packages that are versioned and can be switched on demand
  • Ensure that user software environments are delivered to the users efficiently and effectively
  • Install, configure, and maintain HPC performance analysis, profiling and debugging tools
  • Install, configure, and maintain: Cloud-based software frameworks and stacks; tools for interactive computing, data exploration and visualization; interactive and collaborative programming environments; workflow management tools and portals; specialized software frameworks and processing pipelines, in particular for Big Data and AI workflows
  • Collaborate with HPC/Supercomputing Centers and Competence Centers on tools, methodologies, and best practices
  • Identify, evaluate, and adopt promising new software technologies and methodologies
  • Document and coordinate all changes made to the software stacks, keeping track of all changes with a Change Control approach
  • Lead, contribute in, and participate in training and best practice sharing sessions for the efficient and effective use of HPC/Cloud software environments and the underlying HPC/Cloud infrastructure



Skills and Requirements:

  • University degree (Bachelor/Master) in computer science, computer systems,computer engineering, information technology or a closely related field is requested
  • Proven working experience (5 years minimum) in managing user-oriented software stacks in large-scale Linux- based environments, preferably in an HPC/Supercomputing center
  • Expert knowledge of tools and workflows for the automated deployment of open source and commercial software
  • Excellent knowledge of typical Linux distributions (such as RHEL/CentOS, SLES, Debian/Ubuntu)
  • Expert knowledge of managing software installations on HPC systems using tools such as EasyBuild and/or Spack
  • Expert knowledge of managing reproducible software environments using container systems such as Docker, Singularity, Shifter, Sarus
  • Experience deploying specialized software frameworks and processing pipelines, in particular for Big Data and AI workflows
  • Expert knowledge of scripting languages (such as Python, Shell, Lua)and excellent command of at least one programming language used in modern HPC environments (C, C++, Fortran, Python)
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English is a must. Good control of French and/or German is a plus
