Whiffle and LuxProvide: Pioneering the Future of Weather Prediction and Environmental Intelligence with MeluXina Supercomputer

The collaboration between Whiffle, a Netherlands-based leader in numerical weather prediction, and LuxProvide, Luxembourg’s high-performance computing (HPC), powered by the MeluXina supercomputer, is setting new benchmarks in weather forecasting and environmental intelligence. This partnership underscores the critical role of advanced computational platforms in transforming how we understand and respond to Earth’s complex systems.

Meeting Unpredictable Compute Demands with Flexibility and Reliability

Whiffle delivers advanced weather prediction services and high-precision weather insights to support investment and engineering decisions for multi-gigawatt wind farms, particularly in increasingly clustered developments. As wind energy projects expand in scale and complexity, the simulations required to model their wind resources and energy yield demand vast data processing and computationally intensive calculations. This leads to unpredictable spikes in compute demand that can be difficult to anticipate and provision efficiently.

A prime example is Whiffle’s North Sea wake study for the Dutch government’s 21 GW offshore wind energy roadmap. This project involved running high-resolution, atmospheric simulations over the areas planned for future wind farm development – which required significant computational power and introduced variability in processing needs, making efficient resource allocation a challenge.

LuxProvide, with its MeluXina supercomputer, has proven to be a vital partner in addressing such challenges. Unlike other vendors, LuxProvide does not require upfront commitments, enabling Whiffle to secure resources on demand without last-minute surprises. The simple and transparent costing model eliminates uncertainty, while the personalized, customer-focused service—bolstered by the technical expertise of the LuxProvide team—ensures that Whiffle’s specific needs are met seamlessly.

“LuxProvide’s flexibility and tailored approach allow us to handle even the most demanding computational workloads without the logistical complexities of provisioning resources on short notice. Their advanced computing capabilities were instrumental in our recent North Sea wake study for the 2030 offshore wind roadmap for the Dutch government. This collaboration not only made complex, high-resolution simulations feasible but also equips us to take on even more ambitious challenges—driving breakthroughs in renewable energy forecasting.”

Enabling Precise and Scalable Weather Forecasting

Whiffle’s innovative Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model, designed to provide high-resolution weather forecasts, achieves unprecedented precision by leveraging MeluXina’s 18 PetaFlops of computing power and 20 PetaBytes of storage. This infrastructure allows Whiffle to conduct ultra-high-resolution weather simulations over domains as large as 320 km x 320 km and process long historical periods in just hours.

“Working with LuxProvide and utilizing the MeluXina supercomputer has fundamentally expanded the scale of Whiffle’s numerical weather prediction capabilities. By leveraging MeluXina’s extensive GPU capacity, we have not only enhanced the speed and scale of our models but also laid the groundwork for future applications at continental scales, significantly advancing renewable energy forecasting and resource optimization.”

– Remco Verzijlbergh, CEO of Whiffle

Transforming Earth System Foresight with HPC and AI

MeluXina’s computational capabilities also extend to broader Earth system foresight, supporting researchers and policymakers with actionable insights into global challenges like climate change, natural disasters, and biodiversity loss. Its ability to process terabytes of space data, simulate complex climate models, and integrate multiple data sources ensures fast and precise decision-making.

AI, when combined with HPC platforms like MeluXina, plays a transformative role by:

  • Enhancing model accuracy: Refining predictive algorithms for weather and climate systems.
  • Accelerating simulation speed: Enabling real-time analysis of critical environmental data.
  • Maximizing renewable energy potential: Improving forecasts for wind and solar energy production.
“Our mission at LuxProvide is to empower innovation by combining HPC and data science expertise. The partnership with Whiffle exemplifies how MeluXina can revolutionize industries such as renewable energy while addressing pressing environmental challenges,”

– Filipe Pais, Chief Customer Officer at LuxProvide

A New Era of Environmental Intelligence

By combining Whiffle’s expertise in LES-based weather models with MeluXina’s unparalleled computing power, the collaboration represents a paradigm shift in how technology supports global sustainability efforts. Their pioneering solutions not only enhance renewable energy forecasting but also contribute to the broader goal of planetary resilience.

Building on their progress, Whiffle and LuxProvide are now exploring even more advanced and larger weather predictions models that will be enabled by the new generation of GPUs. They anticipate that computational barriers will come down quickly, paving the way for 100m resolution weather and climate models on scales never seen before.

With MeluXina at its core, LuxProvide and Whiffle are redefining what’s possible in weather prediction and Earth system intelligence.
